History and description of Lichfield Radio Observatory (LRO)
Lichfield Radio Observatory is an astronomical observatory based in Lichfield, UK. Lichfield’s latitude is 52.6815 and longitude is -1.8255. Lichfield is a cathedral city and civil parish in Staffordshire, England. One of eight civil parishes with city status in England, Lichfield is situated roughly 16 mi (26 km) north of Birmingham. The astronomical observatory was founded in 2005, and comprises a number of visual and radio telescopes. Projects under way include mapping the the Milky Way’s spiral arms, demonstrating dark matter, weighing the Milky Way, meteor radio observation (part of an international group who monitor meteor numbers), muon detection, monitoring solar flares, monitoring magnetic field of Earth, solar and deep sky observation and photography, amongst others.
